Thelwyn with Martelize and Dorette with Franco

The 2 cousins together on the farm

On Friday Thelwyn came with Martelize and Gert and Dorette with Franco. Hendrik stayed in Pretoria because he had to work on Saturday. (Frans is in Namibia at the moment - that is why Thelwyn came on her own.) It is the first time we had both grandchildren here together, and a very special occassion for us.
Franco's bib said: Dribble happens. Get over it. I think it will become a family phrase. When lying on his tummy (or on his back), he propels himself forward as long as he can push his feet against your hands. His arms do not co-operate yet - i.e. not a real leopard crawl yet, but he is getting there! He has started to roll over. He is a woeliekous (wriggly worm) and a babblekous (chatterbox), but not really a slaapkous (sleepy head). I did not realise we use the word kous (sock) so ofter to describe a child! Franco we love your new tricks! (He turned 4 months yesterday.)
Martelize is now 3 1/2 weeks old. She is as good as gold: Thelwyn breastfeeds her every four hours and Friday night she slept from 10:00 till 5:00! She battles with the odd cramps, but generally she is happy and content.
My sister Anne was here on Saturday and popped in again today. It was so good to have her.
One of the younger horses got a bad cut and Thelwyn had to go up to the stables with the vet this morning. I had the pleasure to look after Martelize while she was wide awake and very content. It was a warm day, but her hands were chilly, so I dolled her up in a tiny matinee jacket that Thelwyn herself wore when she was one week old. Martelize then lay on her blanket and kicked to her heart's content and stared at her hands, the trees outside the window, a black and red toy.... I do not know what she sees, but it was so special to watch her little face.
Every phase is so special.
Thank you God for our adorable grandbabies. Please bless them always!

This weekend

It was Frans's birthday on Friday. On Thursday Thelwyn baked homemade goodies for the celebration at his work and Dorette went over to help her and I joined them later. I admired Thelwyn for wanting to be this good housewife with Martelize just over 2 weeks old! Thelwyn did not dare even taste her own fare - she strictly sticks to a no sugar diet for the sake of Martelize. I had to lick her choolate covered fingers!

Gert and Dorette and Franco paid us a visit on Friday evening. Franco was awake most of the time - he is very active and sleeps very little. He has discovered his hands and is too cute. Lightweight rattles are hard to come by and in the end Dorette gave him a toothbrush to hold. We decorated it with a bow cut from a yellow shopping bag and he seemed to love it. He lay on his blanket, brandishing this "toy" and later fell asleep like that!

Frans and Thelwyn and Martelize came over on Saturday. They sold a horse! Great joy! The horse buyers arrived just about when it was feeding time for Martelize. Fortunately she was still sleepy and I could get her to go back to sleep and then to suck her dummy (pacifier) for another hour. I changed her nappy and then Jan had to go and call the mother. She was properly hungry then! After her long sleep in the morning she did not sleep much in the afternoon. She was a very good little baby. Her awareness of the world around her is increasing almost by the hour. She seems very aware of sounds and light. Blinks if the sun shines on her face. When she sleeps, her hands are relaxed - no tight swaddling necessary!

The children are such a joy and a blessing - the parents, the little ones and the undle! Hendrik is keen to be involved, but since he has a bit of a cold, he has tried to keep his distance.

On my insistence Hendrik cooked a curry, drumsticks and deboned a chicken, which we divided into portions in plastic bags and froze. He has single portions of 6 dishes for the week and I made a list of veggies he should buy tomorrow. I hope this will help him to eat more healthily - and not to try and get his weeks fill over weekends only!

Thelwyn with Martelize - only 11 days old and she's back in her clothes!

Franco's consecration

On Wednesday 6 August Franco was consecrated at Doxa Deo (Gert and Dorette's church) at a very intimate and special occassion. Four babies were consecrated and their families could pray with the parents.

Franco we pray that you will always be happy. We know that you can only be happy if you know the Lord, so we pray that you will get to know Him early in your life and have a very special relationship with our Lord Jesus. We know that He has great things in stall for you!

Today (Sunday) the babies were introduced to the congregation. It was also very special. Afterwards we had tea at Gert and Dorette's town house. The table looked lovely with an overlay of the same blue velvet that Franco's vest was made of. I made his little romper out of left over material of Dorette's wedding dress. He looked adorable and behaved very well throughout the church service and the party afterwards. But the snappers between his legs became undone often while he was lying and kicking - either in someone's arms or on his blanket on the carpet. He was very active!

Frans and Thelwyn came too. Thelwyn has already regained her slim figure: one would never guess that her baby is only 11 days old! Martelize was also on best behaviour while they were there.

We praise the Lord for these two perfect little babies: Psalms 138: "I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made!" Each child is so very special and unique - a real miracle.

Introducing our grandchildren

Gert and Dorette (our 2nd daughter) have a little baby boy, born on 23 April 2008: Franco Jean Labuschagne. He is named after his grandfathers: Frans Johannes Labuschagne and Jan Andries Nicolaas Breytenbach. (The co in Franco comes from Nicolaas). They wanted to retain Gert's father's (and his brother') initials F.J., but chose a name that would not be confused with all the other Frans' in the family and also one that is more internationally recognized.

Frans and Thelwyn (our elder daughter) have a little baby girl, born 30 July 2008: Martelize Hanri Hammann. She is named after her grandmother Marie Elise (me) and her paternal grandmother Johanna Maria and deceased grandfather Heinrich.

The names were kept secret until the babies were born. We knew that Thelwyn was expecting a girl, but Gert and Dorette had chosen not to know the sex of their baby. In both cases there was this wonderful moment of surprise and we would not have had it any other way. We love the names the children have chosen.

Both babies weighed 3 kg at birth. Franco was 50 cm tall and Martelize 51 cm. According to Miekie's baby book, she weighed 6lb 12 (3. 07 Kg) and was 20" (50.5 cm) tall. So in size the babies were pretty much the same as me!

Thelwyn was born 5 days late and Martelize was also born 5 days late! Franco was born 4 days early. Franco was born exactly a month after his greatgrandmother Ethelwyn de Vos had passed away and Martelize came exactly 3 months and a week after Franco.

We adore both babies and so greatful that both families live close enough so that we can see them at least once a week! We are indeed priviledged. For Christmas Thelwyn gave us a book: "Die beste Ouma en Oupa ooit" (The best Grandma and Grandpa ever) and that is what we hope we will be (are).
